Barry D. Smith MED’60

Professor Emeritus and Chair Emeritus, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth

Dr. Barry Smith has served the Dartmouth medical community for the last 50 years, joining the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1970 as a clinical assistant professor and retiring as a full professor in 2005. In those five decades, Dr. Smith dedicated himself to teaching and mentoring the next generation of clinicians. He designed the OB/GYN clerkship for Dartmouth Medical School students and led the development of an academic OB/GYN department and the development of its accredited residency program. At Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Dr. Smith introduced laparoscopy for gynecology—its first use in New Hampshire—and instructed residents in laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Smith also has been deeply committed to quality improvement, conceiving the establishment of the Northern New England Perinatal Quality Improvement Network (NNEPQIN) and receiving the Innovator’s Award for Quality Improvement Leadership Efforts from the Foundation for Health Communities. As an alumnus, Dr. Smith has served as his class secretary, sat on the Alumni Council, and chaired the Alumni Council Awards Committee.
