In 2015, New Hampshire native Perry Cohen, MEd, came out as a transgender man. Using the woods as a tool to help him navigate his transition, Perry realized how important nature was in helping him accept and love his true self. He wanted to share the power of the outdoors with others in the LGBTQ+ community. So, alongside his personal transition he had a professional transition as well. After years as a corporate executive, Perry quit his indoor job and returned to his roots as an outdoorsperson by founding The Venture Out Project. Venture Out is a non-profit that offers wilderness trips for members of the LGBTQ+ community, and provides transgender inclusion training for outdoor adventure companies, schools, camps and more. Perry uses his personal story to illustrate the challenges and triumphs of transition, offers insight into what being trans is like, and offers opportunities for others to feel the power of the trans community and consider how they can build their own allyship.
