Black History Month 2022 Celebration

Please join the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), Geisel Student Government, the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement (DICE), and the Office of Alumni Relations in celebrating Black History Month this February.

Feb.1- Black MD Panel

6:00 pm EST

Join us for a virtual panel discussion with Black Physicians from Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center to hear about their unique paths in medicine and other degrees they have incorporated into their career. This panel will feature: Dr. Rian Hasson, MD, Thoracic Surgery; Dr. Kevin Kwaku, MD, Cardiac Electrophysiology PhD; Dr. Matthew Mackwood, MD, Family Medicine, MPH; Dr. Charles Thomas, MD, Chief of Radiation Oncology. Moderated by Dr. Erika Brown, Dean of Faculty Affairs at Geisel with introductions from Falen Demsas and Dr. Erick Lansigan, Interim Dean of Diversity, Inclusion, Community Engagement.

Feb. 5- SNMA, qMD and LMSA Crossover Movie Night

7:00 pm EST

Please join us for the first ever SNMA, LMSA, and qMD crossover night. We will be screening the documentary Paris is Burning that highlights and chronicles the ball culture of New York City and the African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities involved in it during the early-to-late 1980’s. There will also be a discussion afterwards led by SNMA, LMSA and qMD leaders. Pizza will be provided for the first 50 registrants if you sign-up before 2/4; physical pickup details will be provided after registration.


Feb. 8- WC4BL Poetry session

12:15 pm EST

Our first art series, hosted by White Coats for Black Lives, (WC4BL) will highlight the poetry works of Black poets throughout the generations. This session will be led by Adina Harri (MS2) who will be showcasing Black excellence in poetry.


Feb 12- Black Student Wellness Night

6:30 pm EST

The Wellness Night will be an opportunity for Black medical students in all phases of training to get together, unwind, and connect. This fun and relaxing event will include a guided meditation and facilitated conversations on wellness and preventing burnout while participants paint. Painting supplies and a wellness basket will be provided to participants who register.

*Please note that this event is solely for those who identify as Black.*


Feb 13- 24-Hour Screening of “Shadows Fall North” Documentary

We will be providing 24-hour access to view the acclaimed documentary “Shadows Fall North”, highlighting the history of the African American community in NH. How does a state with the motto "Live Free or Die" and a celebrated legacy of abolitionism confront and understand its participation in slavery, segregation, and the neglect of African American history?


Feb 15- Black History at Geisel

This presentation will highlight the long history of black students at Geisel/DMS and the Dartmouth Community at large. Derek Colaizzo (MS1) will lead us through the history of firsts that began here at Dartmouth with a presentation adapted from Dr. Kenneth Williams’ presentation on the same topic last year. It will be an informative insight on Black people throughout the years in the Dartmouth community. Come learn and help us celebrate!


Feb 18 - Talk with the Kellogg Mural Artist, Sam Modder

6:00 pm EST

Have you ever wondered about the history and vision behind the Black Lives Matter mural in the Kellogg mezzanine? During our 2nd art series we will have the opportunity to talk with Sam Modder, the artist of the mural about what inspired her to create the piece and why at Geisel. Join us (virtually) for wine, cheese, and chill vibes. Charcuterie boards will be available for local pickup for the first 30 registrants who sign-up before noon on 2/18; details on the pickup location will be shared after registration.




















Feb 23 - Embedding Racial Justice & Advancing Health Equity with Aletha Maybank, MD, MPH 

7:00 pm EST

Structural racism is a system of power and oppression that structures opportunities and assigns human value based on race. This creates differential access to health care, education, housing, employment, and criminal justice. Racism impacts the mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health of people of color. In this talk, Dr. Maybank will discuss how dismantling systems of power and oppression is the work of us all and what the AMA has done and plans to do to advance health equity. Aletha Maybank, MD, MPH, is the Senior Vice President And Chief Health Equity Officer for the American Medical Association. She will be introduced by Duane A. Compton, PhD, Dean, Geisel School of Medicine.

Feb 25- BHM Trivia Night

7:00 pm EST

​​Join SNMA for our final night of BHM with an amazing game of trivia, good times, and unlimited laughs. Our trivia will include questions on popular culture, icons in black history, your favorite cookout songs, and much more! We will be giving out $250, $150, and $100 gift cards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes respectively! Come ready to have fun and meet some of your fellow students, colleagues, and alumni! To punctuate our month-long celebration, the DICE office will be hosting a virtual after party with DJ Sean. We will be playing in teams (of up to five members). To register your team, fill out this form by February 23.

Raffles: At each event, attendees will be entered into a raffle and get the chance to win a prize from various Black owned businesses! Two winners will be announced at the end of each event. Furthermore, for every event attended, the attendees will be added to the final raffle in the hopes of winning the bigger prize at the end of the month! Make sure you attend as many events as you can to increase your chances of winning something great!
