Dermatologist, Private Practice, Point Pleasant, NJ; Clinical Leader, Jersey Shore University Medical Center; Consultant Physician for the New Jersey Devils Professional Hockey Team and the New Jersey State Police
Bruce L. Warshauer, MD, MED ’77 has devoted his career to advancing the field of dermatology while epitomizing the values of service and compassionate, skilled care instilled during his education at Dartmouth Medical School. After earning his medical degree in 1977, he trained in internal medicine at the University of Rochester and completed his dermatology residency at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, where his professors and mentors created a lifelong passion for his specialty.
Dr. Warshauer quickly emerged as an innovator, pioneering the early use of immunomodulators, acting via toll-like receptors and cytokines to assist with the treatment of skin cancer. Dr. Warshauer also advanced the use of lasers in dermatology, offering patients new ways to improve both medical conditions and enhance patient quality of life. He has shared his expertise nationally and internationally, presenting at the American Academy of Dermatology and the World Congress on Cancers of the Skin. He has published on topics ranging from alopecia areata to the treatment of basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas.
His clinical acumen and ingenuity enables him to treat challenging dermatology conditions. He has been called upon to solve complex and severe dermatologic disorders in less conventional settings. This included diagnosing and treating debilitating infections among recruits at the New Jersey State Police Academy. He was also called upon to diagnose and treat significant chemical skin injury affecting a majority of the professional athletes on the New Jersey Devils Hockey Team. These experiences showcase Dr. Warshauer’s clinical capabilities to solve hard problems in diverse, high-stakes environments.
Equally meaningful to Dr. Warshauer has been his commitment to care for patients in underserved communities. As a leader in the dermatology clinic at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Dr. Warshauer provided comprehensive care to patients who otherwise would not have received any care. This is Dartmouth’s vision of service, first impressed upon him by Dean Nicholas L. Danforth, MD during his medical school interview. Dr. Warshauer was also recognized by United Airlines for saving the life of an infant in-flight.
Continuing in his private practice for over 44 years, Dr. Warshauer continues to find meaning in every patient encounter. He takes special pride in working alongside his daughter, Emily Mira Warshauer, MD, also a board-certified dermatologist. His career is marked by great compassion and clinical excellence.
