Andrea Hayes-Dixon D '87, MED '91, HON '23
Dr. Hayes-Dixon broke barriers as the first African American female board-certified pediatric surgeon and pioneered new treatments for rare pediatric cancers using HIPEC. She serves in top roles including Dean of Howard University College of Medicine and federal advisory leadership, shaping academic medicine and biomedical research.
Matthew Liang MED '67
Dr. Liang led groundbreaking work integrating epidemiology into rheumatology, with 400+ publications and major clinical trials shaping care for chronic diseases. He built influential training programs at Harvard and mentored generations of clinician‑scientists who now lead globally.
John Mellors D '75, MED '78
Dr. Mellors discovered that viral load predicts HIV progression, a breakthrough that enabled modern combination antiretroviral therapy and transformed global HIV outcomes. He built and led a nationally prominent division at the University of Pittsburgh, expanding its research, clinical impact, and reputation.
Richard Redett MED '95
Dr. Reddett is a renowned pediatric plastic surgeon at Johns Hopkins, advancing care for complex craniofacial, burn, and reconstructive conditions and leading one of the nation’s premier cleft care programs. He has held top leadership roles at Johns Hopkins, shaping clinical strategy, expanding programs, and strengthening multidisciplinary care and training.
Sarah Johansen MED '89/'90, RES '93
Dr. Johansen has served as a beloved teacher and mentor for decades, with multiple awards and leadership of major curriculum and education initiatives at Geisel. She was a longtime emergency physician who extended impact nationally through ACEP leadership and locally through founding a human rights clinic.
