In the field of reproductive health and family medicine, Sarah E. McNeil, MD, FAAFP, MED ’09 is an unequivocal luminary. Since graduating from Dartmouth Medical School in 2009, Dr. McNeil has made it her mission to expand access to comprehensive reproductive care, especially abortion, in some of the country’s most medically underserved and politically fraught regions.

A dedicated full-spectrum family doctor and medical staff president at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in California, Dr. McNeil not only manages labor and delivery, urgent care, and surgical abortions, but also oversees the quality of care provided by more than 700 medical staff. Among her peers, she is known for her humility and her capacity to inspire, earning faculty awards like “Champion of Reproductive Rights” and “Strongest Co-Conspirator.”

Nationally, Dr. McNeil plays a pivotal role in abortion spaces, advancing innovative curricula to train providers and mentoring hundreds of clinical trainees, many from underrepresented backgrounds. As an advocate, she’s influenced reproductive health policy through leadership in the Society of Family Planning, the National Abortion Federation, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the California Academy of Family Physicians, where she has authored numerous policy resolutions on contraception, abortion, equity, and access.

Dr. McNeil’s commitment is personal and profound. For years, she commuted monthly to Texas, providing abortions where care is desperately needed—a story chronicled by the Los Angeles Times. Through every challenge, she upholds the values of patient autonomy, equity, and evidence-based care. Celebrated for her clinical excellence, innovation in education, and passion for justice, Dr. McNeil exemplifies the ideals of Dartmouth and the highest spirit of the Young Alumni Award.
