Reunion 2009 Summary

"A Dartmouth Colloquium on Global Health: Addressing Challenges of Science and Policy" started the weekend Friday afternoon as alumni and guests listened to a panel of global health specialists, including Dartmouth's new president Dr. Jim Yong Kim, discuss population health issues facing countries around the world. Topics included the role of academic institutions in defining issues and problems in global health, building capacity to improve health and the method for evaluating efforts, and the development, implementation and funding for new scientific discoveries such as vaccines designed to reduce the burden of disease. The colloquium was co-sponsored by DMS, TDI and the Dickey Center for International Understanding.

This year, 2009, marked the 15th anniversary of the first graduating class from one of our preeminent Dartmouth programs, The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, formerly the Center for Evaluative Clinical Sciences.

On Friday evening, everyone enjoyed a welcome reception at the Dartmouth Outing Club.

On Saturday, alumni participated in local activities from golfing and canoeing on the Connecticut to visiting other favorite spots in the area.  Over coffee, Dean Green gave an update on the school and on the Transforming Medicine Campaign.  Several class meetings were held to nominate a class representative to the Alumni Council.  A luncheon brought everyone together on Dartmouth College's BEMA where there was plenty of barbecue food before people headed off to the Dartmouth v. Penn football game.  Despite the torrential downpour, spirits ran high and everyone seemed to have a good time.  Joe Denny, a Dartmouth sports director, hosted children’s activities with lawn games, a special bounce house, and crafts.  Many guests enjoyed the afternoon excursions.

The day ended with special all-classes dinner at the Lake Morey Resort, while children got together for a movie night.  In Dean Green's absence, Senior Advising Dean Joe O'Donnell '71 gave a short welcome, then accepted reunion giving reports from highlighted reunion class committees.  Although the drive to Lake Morey was a bit remote, alumni enjoyed the new setting and the food.  Those who stayed at the resort enjoyed golf and the view of foliage over the lake.

On Sunday, DMS alumni said farewell over breakfast at the Hanover Inn. Although it rained most of the weekend, alumni spirits weren't dampened.  Friendships rekindled and promises were made to come back in five years to get together again.  We are happy to report Reunion questionnaires reported very high ratings for the entire reunion weekend.

The dates for Fall Reunion next year are September 24-26, 2010.   All alumni are encouraged to visit Dartmouth whenever they can. For any assistance with travel or lodging, please visit our resource page or contact the Alumni Office.
