Pilot Program Cultivates Future Physician-Scientists
The Science Scholars program at the Geisel School of Medicine matches first-year MD students who are interested in basic and translational research with MD-PhD students who have similar research interests and who serve as peer mentors. The program is proving to be a win-win for both groups of students.

Class Day 2012

The sun shone brightly on Class Day 2012, with 158 graduates receiving degrees from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. Dr. Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners in Health, gave the keynote address, and three student speakers reflected on the perseverance, devotion, and accomplishments of their classmates. As one by one, 64 fourth year students received the coveted envelopes revealing where they will go for internships and residencies after their June graduation, they were joined in celebration—at least in spirit—by the alumni who contributed to the Fund for DMS Match Day Match Challenge. DMS Students Learn TALES from Life
DMS student Jill Kaspar ’13 knew she would be involved in TALES—The Alzheimer’s Learning Experience for Students—from the moment she first heard about it. Developed by Robert Santulli, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and director of the Dartmouth Memory Clinic, TALES pairs Dartmouth students with a “learning partner” who has Alzheimer’s, so that students can learn about the disease from the perspective of a companion and friend. “What I find with my learning partner is that you have to be present-focused,” Kaspar says. “Even though the progression of the disease is very sad, there are a lot of happy moments.”

Dartmouth Team Places in Global Health Case Competition

A team of Dartmouth undergraduate and graduate students – including two DMS students -- finished in the top four at the 2011 Emory Global Health Case Competition in March, 2011. The annual competition brings students together to create innovative solutions for 21st-century global health issues. The Dartmouth team included students with backgrounds in anthropology, business, engineering, geography, global health, and medicine, to create a truly diverse and multidisciplinary team.

Match Madness: 67 DMS Students Learn Residency Destinations
Whoops, cheers, hugs, and applause were the order of the day at Dartmouth Medical School's 2011 Match Day ceremony on March 17, when 67 students learned where they'll begin residency training after they graduate in June.

Nierenberg to step down from role as Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education

After nearly 30 years at DMS, and 16 years serving as Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, Dr. David Nierenberg has decided to step down from this role. He will stay at DMS as a Senior Advising Dean and will continue to direct SBM and to teach, mentor, and provide valuable expertise. "I can think of no one who has been more committed to medical student education, both here at Dartmouth as well as nationally," wrote Dean Souba. Read the Dean’s announcement here...

Souba Appointed DMS Dean

Dartmouth President Jim Yong Kim has announced the appointment of Dr. Wiley “Chip” Souba as Dean of Dartmouth Medical School and Vice President for Health Affairs of Dartmouth College. An internationally recognized academic surgeon, Souba comes to DMS from Ohio State University, where he has served as Dean of the College of Medicine… Read more

Commencement 2010

Showers did nothing to dampen spirits at DMS Class Day and Dartmouth Commencement on June 12 and 13. DMS awarded 192 degrees: 86 MDs, 41 PhDs, 42 MPHs, and 23 MS degrees. DMS Class Day included speeches by MD candidate Rajesh Ramanathan and PhD candidate Yolanda Nesbeth. Read their speeches here.

At the White Coat Ceremony on October 3, the 84 men and women of the Class of 2013 formally adopted their class mission statement, with each student signing the document that class members had developed over the preceding weeks.
