Reunion 2010 Summary

A Special Dartmouth Community Medical School Mini-Session,"Bionic Man and Super Woman: Changing Human Capabilities" was the first event of the weekend on Friday afternoon.  Alumni and guests listened to presentations by Drs. Lionel Lewis, director of the Dartmouth Community Medical School, and his DMS colleague, Richard Rothstein. Dr. Lewis talked about the interface of human genetic information and its use in individualizing prescribing for patients.  Dr. Rothstein discussed the future of surgical interventions which are moving from open large-incision procedures to laparoscopic "bandaid-closure" ones to the emerging latest technology of Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES).  The two talks were a special showcase from the larger series which was offered during spring 2010 in Hanover and is now offered in Manchester, NH.  Each year the DCMS offers programs on contemporary health and medical issues.

On Friday evening, everyone enjoyed a welcome reception at the Dartmouth Outing Club.

On Saturday, alumni participated in local activities from golfing and canoeing on the Connecticut to visiting favorite spots in the area.  Over coffee, Dean Green gave an update on the school.  Several class meetings were held to nominate a class representative to the Alumni Council.  A luncheon brought everyone together on the lawn near the DMS administration buildings on Rope Ferry Road where there was plenty of barbecue food before people headed off to the Dartmouth v. Sacred Heart football game.  Joe Denny, a Dartmouth sports director, hosted children’s activities with lawn games, a bounce house, and lawn games.  Several special class gatherings were also organized by individual class members throughout the day.  Many guests enjoyed the afternoon excursions. The weather was glorious all weekend!

The day ended with special all-classes reception at the Top of the Hop and dinner at Alumni Hall, while children got together for a movie night and special art project instructed by Katy Briggs, student intern from the Hood Museum.  Dean Green gave a short welcome, then accepted reunion giving reports from highlighted reunion class committees.  Steve Bensen '90 served as emcee for the reunion gift presentation which included special recognition and a standing ovation to "retiring" Fund for DMS Chair John Moran '55.

On Sunday, DMS alumni said farewell over breakfast at the Hanover Inn. Friendships rekindled and promises were made to come back in five years to get together again.  We are happy to announce that Reunion questionnaires reported very high ratings for the entire reunion weekend, with the weather and foliage receiving high markings!

The dates for Fall Reunion next year are September 23-25, 2011.   All alumni are encouraged to visit Dartmouth whenever they can. For any assistance with travel or lodging, please visit our resource page or contact the Alumni Office.
