Geisel Celebrates 85 New MD Graduates
“Stay connected with those you care about most…and call on your friends near and far when you need encouragement,” Sarah Johansen, M’89/’90, told the 85 MD graduates on Class day. You can read her speech here and read more about the Class Day event here.

Geisel’s Deborah Hogan Receives National Mentorship Award
Deborah Hogan, PhD, an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Geisel, has received the 2016 Dr. Thomas Maciag COBRE (Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence) Independence Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This national award recognizes individuals who “exemplify Dr. Maciag’s ideals of research excellence and commitment to mentoring,” says Hogan. “For me, it’s a reflection of the fact that there’s a great mentoring culture here at Dartmouth.”   

Student Spotlight – Jessica Charles: Navigating the Cultural Divide
“You may not speak the same language, but there are many ways to connect with people,” says first year medical student Jessica Charles. As an emergency medical technician (EMT) in Jamaica Plain, Mass., one of Boston’s most ethnically diverse neighborhoods, she learned that “it’s important to meet [people] where they are rather than trying to get them to come to you.”

The Rise of the Physician-Innovator
The Dartmouth Institute’s Chris Trimble has created a virtual seminar series designed to spotlight the groundbreaking work of physician-innovators. According to Trimble, many of the most powerful advances in medicine are coming not from new drugs or devices, but from innovations in health care delivery led by physicians on the front lines.

It’s Time for Alumni Awards Nominations!
Recognize and honor the accomplishments of your fellow graduates of the medical school, colleagues who have distinguished themselves in medicine, science, research, or service to the school. Don’t wait – fill out the online nomination form now. Nominations are due by September 2nd.

Check the Science: Being Trans Is Not a ‘Choice’
Leslie Henderson, PhD, Dean of Faculty Affairs at Geisel, has spent more than two decades studying sex-specific differences in the brain. In an opinion piece for Ozy (May 2016) Henderson writes, “What most people don’t know is that our brain is both literally and figuratively our biggest sex organ. Brain differences are biological. We should know then that to be transgender is not a choice.”
