Listening at the End of Life
Achieving closer alignment between preference and reality in medical care is what motivates Drs. Kathy Kirkland, M’86, and Ellen Bassett, M’82, and their colleagues in the Section of Palliative Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock. Dr. Kirkland thinks of palliative care “as an extra layer of support for patients facing serious, complex illness.”
Nobel Laureate to Give Inaugural Munck-Pfefferkorn Prize Lecture
Thomas C. Südhof, MD, the Avram Goldstein Professor in the School of Medicine at Stanford University, will give the inaugural Munck-Pfefferkorn Prize Lecture at Geisel on Sept. 9, 2016. Dr. Südhof was one of three researchers awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine “for their discoveries of machinery regulating vesicle traffic, a major transport system in our cells.” Donations from grateful protégés of Elmer Pfefferkorn, PhD, emeritus professor of microbiology and immunology, and the late Allan Munck, PhD, emeritus professor of physiology and neurobiology, enabled the creation of the annual Munck-Pfefferkorn Prize Lecture.
Helping Babies Overcome Opioid Withdrawal
As opioid use in New Hampshire has skyrocketed, the number of infants born with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) has also grown. Last year, one in 10 babies born at Dartmouth-Hitchcock had been exposed to opioids in utero. A new model of care for infants with NAS, developed by Geisel associate professor of pediatrics Alison Holmes, MD, MPH, with Geisel student Emily Atwood, M’16, and more than 50 Geisel and Dartmouth-Hitchcock colleagues, is receiving national attention.
Dr. Freddie Fu Inducted into AOSSM Hall of Fame
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Freddie Fu, M’75, chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC, is known worldwide for his pioneering treatment of sports-related injuries. Dr. Fu attributes his interest in sports to his family, who excelled in various athletics. “My mother was a very good basketball player,” says Fu. In July, he was inducted into the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Hall of Fame (AOSSM).
