National Hispanic Heritage Month
2021 Celebration

Please join the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA), Geisel Student Government, the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement (DICE), the Office of Alumni Relations, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), and Project Salud in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 - October 15.

Virtual Empanada Night 
09/15 7:00 pm EST
Kick off National Hispanic Heritage Month with a virtual empanada making night led by LMSA leaders Ariana Diaz and Daniela Orozco Rendon! Pre-made empanada kits will be handed out 09/14 from 12:00-1:00 pm at Derzon Courtyard which will include the masa and the empanada filling. Tune in on 09/15 via Zoom to learn how to fold and cook the empanadas with other classmates and alumni.

Please be sure to RSVP to the event before 09/10 to ensure that you receive the ingredients for your own empanadas. If you are joining us from outside the Upper Valley, make sure to prep your own masa and filling before the event. A recipe will be provided. There will be an option to learn how to make a Colombian empanada or a Peruvian empanada.

Virtual Keynote Speaker: Improving Public Health Systems and Approaches for Communities of Color

We are honored to have Jose T. Montero, MD, MHCDS ’13, the director of the Center for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as our keynote speaker! Come listen in on a discussion addressing how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted communities of color with an emphasis on how the Latinx community has been affected from a public health systems approach.

In-person PHR Event: What is Community without Home? Stories of Displacement, Resilience and the Immigrant Experience

Welcome our panelists Dr. Juan Carlos Vélez Lara, Professor Daniel Londoño, and Suzanne Serat as they discuss immigration topics related to health rights and the trauma of displacement. This event will be held in person in Oopik Auditorium. Light refreshments will be served. Do not miss out on this amazing opportunity to learn not only from speakers from the Dartmouth community but also from a physician and professor traveling all the way from Colombia!

Virtual Latinx Alumni Panel

Hear from medical professionals who once were in our shoes as they discuss their experiences in medicine. Hear how they have navigated the medical field as Latinx professionals and carved their unique paths. They will discuss their journey as underrepresented minorities in the medical field and how they were able to find community and networking within the profession. Join us via zoom, as we welcome back our excellent Geisel alumni.

In-person IV Placement

Put your medical Spanish to the test at Geisel’s first Medical Spanish IV Placement Workshop! Learn how to place an IV catheter in Spanish. Spanish speakers of any level are welcome. We look forward to seeing you for this wonderful event and hope to provide you with the tools to care for Spanish-speaking patients in the future.

In-person Salsa y Salsa

Close out Hispanic Heritage Month with a bang at our Salsa y Salsa event! Learn how to dance salsa or enter our salsa making competition. There will be a salsa class followed by a salsa making contest. Learn some sweet new dance moves and try some delicious salsa recipes. Participants will need to register beforehand to take the salsa class and submit their salsa. We ask that, if you would like to submit your salsa for the contest, you make a quart for judging. If you submit your salsa to be judged, please help serve your salsa into sample cups per COVID guidelines. Chips will be provided. As for the salsa classes, all levels are welcome, and the only requirement is comfortable clothing! This event will be held in person.
