DMS names Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education
DMS Dean Chip Souba has announced the appointment of Richard J. Simons, MD as Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Associate Vice President for Health Affairs at Dartmouth. Simons, who succeeds Dr. David Nierenberg as Associate Dean, is currently Vice Dean for Educational Affairs at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and is an internationally recognized leader in academic medicine. Read more…



Young alumni match the match
As one by one, 64 fourth-year students received the coveted envelopes revealing where they will go for internships and residencies after their June graduation, they were joined in celebration—at least in spirit—by the alumni who contributed to the Fund for DMS Match Day Match Challenge. Women in Medicine and Science conference: Pioneers, Leaders, Innovators
Please join us on Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 28 to mark the golden anniversary of women students at DMS and to celebrate the contributions and achievements of women in medicine and science. Kosovo President honors DMS’s Strickler
Former Dartmouth Medical School dean and physician James Strickler, DC ’50, DMS ’51, was honored with the a Humanitarian Medal of Mother Teresa prize by Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga during her visit to Dartmouth in March. Strickler began organizing medical exchanges in Kosovo in 1999 to care for refugees following the country’s war of independence. Read more…

A new book by Dr. Ira Byock, MD, director of palliative medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock and a professor at DMS, “pulls no punches” in discussing how Americans die, writes New York Times reviewer Paula Span. DMS rises in U.S. News & World Report rankings of best medical schools
DMS continues to climb among the ranks of the nation’s top medical schools, according to the latest survey by U.S. News & World Report magazine. The rise in rankings is an early sign of success for DMS's 20x20 strategic plan to be in the top 20 medical schools by the end of the decade. Read more…



Surgeon General cites Dartmouth research in new youth smoking report
Research conducted by DMS professor James Sargent, MD and colleagues on how media images of smoking influence young viewers is cited in a new report issued by the U.S. Surgeon General, Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults. "The evidence is sufficient to conclude that there is a causal relationship between depictions of smoking in the movies and the initiation of smoking among young people," the report states.
