Dartmouth honors Chidi Achebe, DMS ’96
Dartmouth’s Martin Luther King Jr. Social Justice Awards honor members of the Dartmouth community who have contributed significantly to social justice, peace, civil rights, education, public health, or environmental justice. Among the four alumni honored at this year’s awards ceremony in January was Chidi Achebe, DMS ’96, who was recognized for his commitment to bridging health care disparities among America’s most vulnerable and underserved populations. Achebe is president and CEO of the Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center, which provides preventive and clinical care to underserved families and children in Boston. Read more…

Student profile: Jon Zipursky is this year’s Syvertsen Fellow
It was a three-year-old boy in Israel who helped Jon Zipursky understand and feel the gravity of congenital heart diseases in children. Zipursky’s experience in Israel was “formative,” he says, not because he plans to pursue pediatrics--his interests lie in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and oncology--but because it showed him the toll an illness can take on a family. It’s not just the patient that a physician cares for, he learned, “it’s everyone around them, too.” Read more…

TDI launches online professional education
Have you ever wished you could take a course at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice? TDI’s new online Professional Education and Non-Degree Program makes its educational offerings accessible to working health care professionals anywhere. Upcoming courses include Shared Decision Making in Patient-Centered Care, Quality by Design, Ethics: the Foundation and Framework for Health Care Quality, and Understanding the Implications of Variation: Tracking Medicine (using Dr. Jack Wennberg's lectures). DMS psychiatrist co-authors report on novel treatment for depression, bipolar disorder
Paul Holtzheimer, DMS’99, is the lead author of a new study showing how deep brain stimulation (DBS) in a particular region of the mind can safely and effectively treat depression in patients with either unipolar major depressive disorder or bipolar II disorder. Holtzheimer collaborated with colleagues at the Emory University School of Medicine on the study prior to joining the DMS faculty last summer. He will continue to work with his former Emory colleagues on developing and refining the use of DBS for treatment-resistant depression. Read more…

American Immunologists to honor DMS’s Bill Green
The American Association of Immunologists (AAI) will honor William R. Green, PhD, DMS’s chair of microbiology and immunology, for his efforts to raise public awareness of the importance of biomedical research and his advocacy of federal research funding in immunology and related fields. A former dean of DMS and the current director of Dartmouth’s Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) in immunology, Green will receive the Distinguished Service Award during AAI’s 2012 annual meeting in May.
