Elizabeth Friedman Leblanc
DMS '97
Elizabeth Friedman Leblanc died April 30, 2010 after a 6½ year struggle with ovarian cancer. An allergist and immunologist, she was 43 years old.
A native of Hanover, Beth was the daughter of DMS faculty members Dr. Frances Friedman and Dr. Harold Friedman. She graduated from Haverford College with a major in English in 1988. After a few years in the publishing business she decided it was one thing to like to read books and another to try to sell them.
While a student at DMS she met Alain Leblanc, a graduate student in Computer Science. They were married in 1996. Dr. Friedman went on to train in Internal Medicine at UMass, followed by a fellowship in allergy and immunology at Washington University in St. Louis, where she did research in adult asthma and drug allergy. Following her two years there, she and her family moved to Rochester, N.Y. where she began her practice at the Genesee Health Service in 2002. She continued to work there until January of 2010. Dr. Friedman was a fellow of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, and an active member of the organization. This past year she was president of the Finger Lakes Allergy Society.
She is survived by her husband, two sons—Samuel Harold, age 11, and Adam Philippe Child, age 8—her parents, her sister Katherine Friedman Yoder and brother-in-law Douglas Yoder, her brother Dr. Theodore Friedman and sister-in-law Dr. Mahtab Tehrani, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. A memorial service was held on Sunday May 2, 2010, at the All Seasons Chapel at Whitehaven Memorial Park in Pittsford, N.Y., the Rabbi Michael Herzbrun officiating.
